Charged EVs | HPQ to receive up to $3 million to commercialize silicon battery materials

Canada-based HPQ Silicon has been awarded up to $3 million in funding by the Government of Canada to accelerate the building of its first continuous production system to manufacture silicon-based material for lithium-ion batteries.

The investment in the facility, which will have the capacity to produce 50 tons annually, comes from the Energy Innovation Program’s Battery Industry Acceleration call for proposals, administered by Natural Resources Canada.

Developed in collaboration with its technology partner Novacium, the silicon-based material is at the core of HPQ’s ENDURA+ commercial 4,000 mAh 18650 and 6,000 mAh 21700 lithium-ion battery cells. HPQ recently shipped the first industrial batches of the cells.

“This strategic investment is a strong endorsement of our technology and the commercial potential of HPQ’s silicon-based materials—supporting not only our HPQ ENDURA+ battery line, but a wide range of high-growth applications,” said Bernard Tourillon, President and CEO of HPQ Silicon. “As global markets race to secure advanced materials for the clean energy transition and digital economy, this facility puts Canada in the driver’s seat.”
