Charged EVs | InstaVolt adds battery storage to its EV charging site on UK’s M6 highway

Public EV charging network InstaVolt operates over 2,200 chargers across the UK, all powered by 100% renewable energy. Now the company has begun a major upgrade of its EV charging site on the M6 motorway.

At the site, located at Welcome Break Corley Services between Junctions 3 and 3A on the M6, InstaVolt will install two large battery storage units, which will store electricity on-site and distribute it directly to the chargers, allowing for a smaller grid connection and ensuring consistent rapid charging performance even during periods of high demand.

In addition to the battery installation, InstaVolt will upgrade the existing chargers from 62.5 kW to 160 kW, improving charge times for drivers. The northbound site will feature eight chargers, while the southbound site will provide seven.

InstaVolt recently installed a similar system, featuring battery storage and solar power, at its Winchester Superhub on the A34 near Winchester. This is just the start of the company’s battery rollout program—it plans to deploy an additional 12 batteries over the coming weeks at charging sites in North Wales and Eastbourne.

Delvin Lane, CEO of InstaVolt, said: “We’re the first to be able to provide this kind of battery storage system on a motorway network. We’re demonstrating how smart energy management can deliver reliable ultra-rapid charging while reducing pressure on the grid. It’s innovation like this that will help ensure EV charging remains scalable, sustainable, and ready for the next wave of electric vehicles.”
