Charged EVs | Terminal 6 at New York’s JFK Airport to launch pooled electric ground fleet

The new Terminal 1 at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, now under construction and already slated to be home to the world’s first electric ground services equipment fleet, will have some company. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport, has said that the new Terminal 6 will also have a pooled fleet of electric ground support equipment (GSE).

This will make JFK the first airport in North America and one of the first in the world where all new terminals will share e-GSE.

The new terminal, which is expected to achieve LEED and ENVISION Gold certifications, will open in two phases. The first six gates will open in 2026, and the remaining four are slated to open in 2028. Terminal 6 will have a number of sustainability features, including over 4,000 solar panels that will generate renewable energy, high-efficiency building systems, stormwater capture and reuse, and 90% waste diversion through the recycling of asphalt, concrete, steel and other materials throughout terminal construction and operation.

The new 1.2-million-square-foot Terminal 6, which will occupy the sites of the former Sundrome and Terminal 7 in Terminal City. In designing the Sundrome, with its simple yet avant-garde look, architect I.M. Pei sought to create a counterbalance against the “highly expressive” TWA Flight Center, also known as Terminal 5.

All ground services equipment at the new terminal will be powered by electric batteries, and the equipment will be shared between ground handlers and ramp services, including aircraft towing vehicles, passenger boarding stairs, aircraft refueling trucks, cargo handling equipment and baggage loaders.

The shared GSE fleet will support the Port Authority’s goal of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions from the region’s airports by 2050, a spokesman for the New Terminal One said.

The new Terminal 6 is being developed by JFK Millennium Partners (JMP), a public-private partnership that includes the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey and JetBlue Airways, among other concerns.
