Charged EVs | Microchip unveils 10BASE-T1S endpoint devices to streamline zonal automotive Ethernet connectivity

Microchip Technology has announced the LAN866x family of 10BASE-T1S endpoint devices with Remote Control Protocol (RCP), aiming to simplify in-vehicle Ethernet network integration in zonal architectures. The company says these endpoints allow direct translation of Ethernet packets to local digital interfaces, removing the need for custom software or microcontrollers on each network node.

The LAN866x endpoints offer a “software-less” solution that reduces silicon usage and minimizes the physical footprint within the vehicle. The devices utilize standard-based RCP protocols, providing centralized control for data streaming and device management across connected edge nodes.

Microchip says by supporting a 10BASE-T1S multidrop topology, the solution enables a fully Ethernet-based zonal architecture, reducing cabling complexity, integration challenges, and system costs. The endpoints are suited for automotive applications, including lighting (such as interior, front, and rear lamps), as well as audio systems and various control functions. The LAN866x products bridge Ethernet data to local interfaces, directly controlling LED drivers, transmitting audio to microphones or speakers, and managing sensors and actuators on the network.

The company notes that its broader Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) portfolio supports 10BASE-T1S, 100BASE-T1, 1000BASE-T1, and higher speed grades, addressing wiring simplification and cost reduction for automotive, industrial and building automation networks. Devices from the LAN866x family are currently available in limited sampling.
