Charged EVs | GlobalFoundries to license TSMC GaN technology for next-generation EV power devices

GlobalFoundries has announced a technology licensing agreement with TSMC for 650-V and 80-V Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology. The company says this move will accelerate its development of GaN products, with market availability projected for late 2026.

According to GlobalFoundries, the adoption of GaN—particularly 650 V and 80 V processes—is aimed at meeting increasing requirements for efficiency, power density and compactness in power systems, which are growing as traditional silicon CMOS technologies approach their performance limits. The company says it is building a comprehensive GaN portfolio designed for high-demand environments, explicitly targeting electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, fast-charging electronics, and data centers.

GlobalFoundries will qualify the TSMC-licensed GaN technologies at its manufacturing site in Burlington, Vermont. The site’s existing expertise in high-voltage GaN-on-silicon technologies and plans to accelerate production of next-generation power devices.

“With the addition of this proven GaN technology, we will accelerate the development of our next-generation GaN chips and deliver differentiated solutions that address critical power gaps for mission critical applications from the data center, to the car, and to the factory floor,” said Téa Williams, Senior Vice President, power business at GlobalFoundries.
