Charged EVs | Piersica launches PIRION polymer to boost lithium-ion battery performance and safety


Piersica has launched a patented polymer, PIRION, that offers enhanced performance for lithium-ion battery applications. The company claims that PIRION improves conductivity, voltage stability, thermal resilience and mechanical durability, and is fully compatible with existing lithium-ion technology.

PIRION features an amorphous molecular structure that increases lithium salt solubility and ion mobility, providing higher conductivity. The material is highly thermally resilient, withstanding temperatures above 300 °C without melting and exhibiting low flammability. PIRION also demonstrates voltage stability at significantly higher levels than polyethylene oxide and polyvinylidene fluoride, making it suitable for use with advanced high-voltage cathodes. Additional characteristics include high mechanical strength and a piezoelectric effect, where the material generates electrical charge under compression.

Piersica says that PIRION can function as both an electrode binder and a solid polymer electrolyte. The material is positioned to offer a cost advantage over conventional lithium-ion battery components, according to the company.

By combining PIRION with Piersica’s proprietary anode, the company says it is developing cells targeting energy densities exceeding 600 watt-hours per kilogram.
