Charged EVs | Dukosi chip-on-cell monitoring system enables Nordic Marine Power’s PowerStack to achieve DNV type approval

Dukosi’s cell monitoring system has enabled Nordic Marine Power to achieve DNV type approval for its PowerStack battery system, certifying it for installation on all vessels classed by DNV.

The Dukosi Cell Monitoring System (DKCMS) places a cell monitor chip directly on each battery cell, measuring temperature and voltage on every cell simultaneously and relaying the data synchronously to the battery management system with deterministic latency. Legacy architectures use only a few temperature sensors per module. With DKCMS, overtemperature events can be detected earlier and the BMS processor alerted even when it’s in a deep sleep mode. Communication between cell monitors and the BMS uses Dukosi’s C-SynQ contactless protocol.

DNV type approval is a globally recognized third-party certification confirming compliance with maritime, offshore and industrial safety and environmental standards. Marine battery systems face higher safety requirements than typical EV or stationary applications, given the confined spaces, fire suppression constraints and remote operating conditions of vessels.

“Dukosi’s novel contactless battery architecture uniquely provides per-cell temperature sensing that improves safety compared to legacy systems,” said Jonas Roald Nordstrand, CEO of NMP. “Having a Dukosi Cell Monitor chip on each cell gives us greater real-time insights into every cell’s behavior, which has allowed us to accelerate achieving DNV certification. Their chip-on-cell technology with C-SynQ simplifies integration into our battery systems, while also providing valuable design flexibility, allowing us to streamline production to meet tight deadlines with confidence.”

“Battery safety, quality, and reliability are of paramount concern” in marine applications, said Joseph Notaro, chief revenue officer at Dukosi. “We’re extremely proud that NMP’s PowerStack with DKCMS has achieved type approval for installation on all vessels classed by DNV.”
